www.russlorenson.com December 2005

  Friends,

Well, I thought it couldn't get any crazier after my amazing October, but November was jam-packed as well! I premiered my new cabaret show, A Little Travelin' Music to great audiences at Kelly's of Alameda, and performed in a concert version of Stephen Sondheim's Follies with a stellar cast of San Francisco cabaret heavyweights!

And just when it didn't look like it could get any crazier, what 'til you hear what's coming up in December!! Read on...

A Little Travelin' Music - my new cabaret show!

After a successful premiere there in November, I have been asked to bring my show back to Kelly's of Alameda in December! There will be two performances only, on December 6 and 13, at 7:00pm.

A Little Travelin' Music tells the story of a 15 year odyssey...how I went from being a full-time performer to a high-tech executive with a million-mile travel schedule, and back again to the stage. Featuring songs by composers such as Cole Porter, George and Ira Gershwin, Johnny Mercer and Cy Coleman, I take audiences on a musical journey around the world through the Great American Songbook.

Backed by my Musical Director, the renowned jazz pianist Kelly Park and his Trio, we'll travel on wings of song...from London to Chicago, Paris to New York, and from Rome to San Francisco.

For the December shows, I will have a special guest appearing with me: the gorgeous and talented vocalist, Kathy Moehring! Kathy and I met when we made our debuts together at the Empire Plush Room in August, and I fell instantly in love with her fantastic voice and electric stage presence! Kathy regularly appears as a headliner at Kelly's of Alameda, and when I was asked to repeat my show there in December, I just knew I had to have Kathy be a part of it. She graciously agreed, and I am excited to be sharing the stage at Kelly's with her.

Advanced reservations are required. Each show will have a $10 cover, plus 2-drink minimum. Food will be available to order from the newly re-opened kitchen under the direction of Chef Stuart Wright. Make reservations for the show early - Kathy Moehring is extremely popular, and the place is sure to be packed!

For reservations, please visit the Box Office on my website, or call (415) 674-3863.

My Debut CD

At last! I go into the recording studio next week with the Kelly Park Trio to begin recording my debut CD. Also titled A Little Travelin' Music, the CD will feature songs from my cabaret show. PLUS, as I mentioned in last month's newsletter, the CD will include duets with two very special guest stars!

I am beyond thrilled to announce that both Shawn Ryan and Klea Blackhurst have each agreed to appear on the CD with me!!

As I've mentioned previously, Shawn Ryan - one of today's hottest jazz/cabaret stars - is also one of my "Cabaret Angels", and has quickly become a dear friend. Since meeting him in June, Shawn has been a guide and mentor to this new world of cabaret, and through his graciousness has introduced me to audiences on both coasts. Shawn and I will record "Why Do The Wrong People Travel?" from Noel Coward's Sail Away, first made famous by Elaine Stritch in her Tony Award-winning performance.

Shawn and I will record our duet in the same studio where he recorded his latest CD, Blue Skies, which has just made the preliminary ballot for this year's Grammy Awards!

Klea Blackhurst, another of my "Angels", is well-known in the cabaret community for her one-woman Ethel Merman tribute show, Everything the Traffic Will Allow, and is currently starring in the new Off-Broadway musical, Bingo. Klea and I worked together at 42nd Street Moon in their hit production of Cole Porter's Red, Hot & Blue! this fall, and got to be fast friends. She and I will record a new version of the Frank Loesser classic "(On A) Slow Boat to China", first made famous in a 1958 recording by Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney.

We will record our duet in the same studio in New York where she recorded her newest CD, Autumn in New York: Vernon Duke's Broadway, which has also made the preliminary ballot for this year's Grammy Awards!

We are already in the midst of planning a Spring promotional tour, with the kickoff CD Release Event to be held at the legendary Empire Plush Room in San Francisco - so watch your January newsletter for details...you won't want to miss it!

A Little Travelin' Music to be taped for broadcast

On December 12th, the new show will be taped for broadcast on public television in 2006. I will have excerpts available on my website in late December, so watch for details in January's newsletter!

Audience Reactions to the Show

Here's what some audience members said about the shows in November:

"I'm still reeling from your show! You're a fine singer, a great story-teller and a fabulous entertainer!" (R.W., Alameda)

"I could listen to you sing and sing and sing and sing...such a lovely instrument and you do such nice things with it!" (T.G., Oakland)

"This is so clearly what you were meant to do!" (D.G., San Francisco)

"I felt like you were talking to me with the songs..." (L.L., San Francisco)

"From your song choices to your intriguing and toe-tapping arrangements, from your smooth delivery to your kick-ass band, it was just a great show!" (M.A., San Francisco)

"Don't you dare leave San Francisco - EVER!" (C.C., San Francisco)

OK, I'm blushing now! But thanks so much to all of you who came to see me - you seemed to have as good a time as I did!

And for those of you who still haven't been to see the show - what are you waiting for? Come on out to Kelly's of Alameda this month and join the party!

Best Wishes for a Happy Holiday season!
